Font survey

We created a font survey to decide which font we should use for the titles on our website and digipak. We decided to do a survey to gain more opinions and we asked mainly people between 15 and 20 years old as this is our main target audience.

Song choice

Our group decided to use the song 'Corrine' by Black Honey for our music video. It was vastly different from the songs we had in our presentation to the class, but the lyrics and beat of this song provide interesting imagery and will allow for us to experiment with many effects and camera shots.

Band/Artist research

Honey Blood is a Scottish music duo with a similar image to that of Black honey. Their song super rat is quirky and the music video is fun and creative.

Ward Thomas is a country duo. Although Black Honey is more indie not country the image ward Thomas have and the style of some of their videos have similar images which could also be used when we build up the image for our artist.

Filming risk assessment

We assessed the risks we may encounter when filming in our locations.

Steal-o-matic

We looked at a variety of videos that may inspire or influence ideas for when we begin to film for our own music video.

Digipak research- Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding's digipak is very unusual because of how simplistic it is. There are only two main colours used, pastel pink and blue, as well as some white text. The photos on the digipak also have the artist wearing the same thing and they have no background.

Digipak research- James Arthur

This digipak of James Arthur's album, 'Back from the Edge', is very plain with the colours blue and white featuring heavily.

Digipak research- Taylor Swift

This digipak is great at making the whole product match and look unified. This is because of the repeated photographs shown in different forms and the photos also all use the same filter.
As well as this, the disc blends in with the background behind it, which is something that we did not see often when doing our research.

Similar artist

VANT are a punk rock band from London. Their style is very much like Black Honey, in the fact that they tend to steer towards more vintage clothes and go for a distressed and edgy look. Their music is heavily influenced by the guitar and drum tracks in their songs, much like Black Honey have strong guitar lines to bring together the song.

Similar website- Wolf Alice

This is the first thing you see when you open the Wolf Alice website. The background is black and completely plain, adding a sophisticated and classy look to the website. It also does not distract from the image in the still of the YouTube video. You can also see that the website features the artist's signature font in the title. There are also buttons below the embedded video that allow you to access the artist's Spotify, Deezer, iTunes, Apple Music and links to purchase CDs and vinyl records. Beneath this, there are links to the artist's social media pages.

Underneath the social media buttons, there is a long list of venues that the artist is due to play at. The list includes dates, venues, geographical location and a button that you can click on to get more information about tickets.

When you click on the 'Tickets and More' button, you get directed to this page. Here, you have more information on the concert and the option to buy tickets from an external site. You can also indicate whether or not you are going or interested in going to the event.

Band name ideas

To come up with our band name, we created a Survey Monkey to gain the feedback from our peers as to what name would best suit our group. The most popular name was 'Exiles' with 31% of the votes going to that name. One suggestion from someone who chose 'other' was to have the name 'Blank Canvas'.

Class feedback- group presentation

This is the feedback we got after presenting our song ideas to our class.

Hopeless, Halsey
Many people had mixed feeling about the instrumental in the middle of the songs, many people disliked this and thought is might be difficult to keep the music video interesting.

Roman Holiday, Halsey
Our class preferred this song more than Hopeless. our peers preferred the beat and it was thought this music video would have a better narrative.

Disciples, Tame Impala
This was the least favorite song of the three, our peers didn't like this as much.

In conclusion to our feedback, as a group we decided to continue to look for a song to use in our music video as we were not happy to use one of the three above.

Similar genre videos

The camera angles in this video are not common, and using shots similar to the slow moving angled ones that this video has would help to make our music video more interesting. Also, the lack of busy movement and sticking to simplicity may be a good contrast for some of our shots.

The vintage, vignette-style effect that this video has would be very interesting to include on some shots in our video to help create a more old fashioned style. This would also allow us to add B-Roll footage in our video, and this can help the audience to connect more with the band, therefore having an increased interest in them.

The performance by the band accompanied by the camera work really suits the fast pace of the song and the genre of it also. Incorporating a mix of quick-paced and slow motion sequences is very engaging.

Audience Task

How do you consume music?
I listen to music every single day, often when I am studying in school or walking home but I also tend to listen to music when I am playing a video game and have the music on in the background. In the morning I will listen to Radio 1 when I am making my breakfast (which most commonly plays chart songs) but my go-to genres for music are Rap, Rock and 90's songs. Lyrics are personally very important to me, and I enjoy learning the lyrics of songs, which is why I like rap music so much.

I listen to music using Spotify mainly, but use other sites and apps such as SoundCloud, BBC iplayer radio and Shazam to discover new songs that I hear. I don't tend to watch music channels on the TV, simply because I don't watch TV all that much anymore and when I do I watch either dramas or documentaries, but I have recently become more inclined to watch music videos on YouTube as the videos on there have become much more interesting than previous music videos.

My most listened to artists include Kendrick Lamar, Nas, Def Leppard, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Destiny's Child and Missy Elliott.

Prelim evaluation

My group for the prelim task included Lucy Hocart and Josh Yates. We decided to recreate the music video of 'You're A Germ' by Wolf Alice because the video emulates a vintage horror film and includes a lot of creative shots and angles. We found matching up the whip pan to be quite hard and also getting realistic fake blood for the end scene. The set up of the house in the actual video was difficult to recreate as that house has a very specific layout, but we managed to flip certain shots to try and match up the house layout.

Class presentation

The feedback we received from the class regarding the songs we had chosen in this presentation made us decide to choose a completely different song all together.

Artists name

We decided to name our artist 'Isla'.

We asked everyone in our class, our teachers, friends and family to vote on what they thought the best name was.
When we researched other artists called Isla, we found that there were no famous singers already on the market with that name and so came to the conclusion that we did not need to use a surname to  market her.

Website analysis

Locations for our music video

Image result for southend beach
Southend beach would be a good location because having a pebbled beach opposed to a fine sand beach emulates the gritty, tough sound that the song has. Filming on a cloudy/overcast day would also help create a slow mood for the first part of the song up to where the guitar comes in.

Image result for camden market stables
Camden market has a plethora of spacesto use that would suit our music video well. From the lock to the underground stables market, there are plenty of spaces that we could incorporate into our music video as there are a lot of colourful stalls and shops, especially in the food market area.
Image result for drama studio
Using a drama studio with a black backdrop and bight overhead lights will help emphasise the first part of the song with the main singer. Having bright makeup/face paint will draw the attention of the audience to the artist.
